As college acceptance letters unfold, opening a letter that begins with "Thank you, but…" is never easy, especially if it's your first-choice school. You've invested a lot of time and energy into thinking about what life would be like at your dream school, and with one letter, that halted. As the immediate feelings of disappointment and sadness overcome you, it's healthy to acknowledge those thoughts at the onset. However, proactive steps can help you move in your intended direction as you take a new approach forward.
The Second Choice Often, getting dismissed from one college creates the right fit destination for another. However, no matter where you end up, you want to make sure that the college you choose allows you to live a healthy, happy lifestyle when you get onto campus and settle into college living. A feeling of belonging lets you know that you were meant to be exactly where you land and will thrive in your setting. If possible, plan physical campus visits, and take the time to see which campus feels most comfortable. Then, check out all the social media possible with photos, reels, etc. Pay close attention to the students who are enrolled. Can you see yourself connecting with these students as friends? Can you envision having shared experiences with some of them? As much as you'll want to be open to meeting different types of peers, it's essential to connect with those who have shared experiences to contribute to your belonging. Next, look to see how the university plans to welcome you. How extensive is their orientation? What type of advisory meetings will you have to help navigate your major and register for classes? Will you be able to find support easily when needed? Knowing the answers to these questions is essential to your overall well-being and new path. Embrace the Opportunity Viewing the "rejection" letter as an opportunity instead of a setback is a positive outlook on a new path. This perspective helps you break away from the ideas of one path, one future, and instead offers you the chance to open yourself to endless possibilities. At the same time, troubleshooting this moment turns the problem into a solution and brings out the best in you. Take this opportunity to flip things to your favor and show others your strengths and capabilities. Continuing Your Pursuit Embracing the opportunity to grow can also mean embracing the chance to persevere. As a student who's worked diligently for outstanding grades and a stellar academic resume, steps can be taken to continue the pursuit of your dream school in a few different ways. First, there can be an opportunity to submit an appeal if your academic standing has changed considerably or extenuating circumstances may have led to your rejection. These could be reasons for an appeal. Research "freshman admission appeals" for your desired school to see if you're eligible. If so, complete the submission process appropriately but remember that there's no guarantee. Secondly, consider transferring to your desired school at a later date. Transfers from school to school occur often. Take the time to meet with an advisor to learn the application process and transfer requirements. If your school has a transfer center, connect with them to discuss ways to improve your academic standing that may ensure admission into your desired school. Surround Yourself with Positivity The influence of others can significantly impact us in both good and bad ways. If you've received a rejection letter from an institution, pay close attention to those who surround you (parents, siblings, and friends) and their reactions. Embrace and look to those who are supportive and help you move in a positive direction. This group is the support network you'll want to have during your transition and will benefit you and your goals greatly. In the end, enjoy your journey! ~ Valecia
